Description of Matt Trautman
I didn’t take the usual path to being a professional Ironman athlete. At a school level I competed as a junior for South Africa in Kayaking but after leaving school I took up sailing, and for the next 10 years immersed myself in the world of competitive yacht racing. I became the first South African to complete the Solo Mini Transatlantic yacht race. I also skippered numerous high performance yachts, to victories in races such as the Cape to Rio, Round Britain and Ireland and Cowes Week. At the end of 2012 I headed home and took up the sport of triathlon. Whilst completing my studies in exercise science, I went on to win my age group at Ironman South Africa and finish 2nd in my age group and 30th overall at the Ironman World Champs in 2013. I then turned pro and joined Brett Sutton and the Trisutto squad in 2014. I went on to win Ironman Wales that same year and have since notched up multiple 70.3 race victories around the globe. "I look forward to helping others achieve their goals and dreams, whilst passing on the knowledge I have learnt from training under Brett Sutton; completing the Trisutto coaching course and from racing as a pro triathlete." In January 2017 Matt was hit by a car whilst out training for the defence of his 70.3 South Africa title. He suffered a compression fracture of his lumbar vertebra and had to undergo a multiple level spinal fusion as a result. Having been involved in coaching for a number of years already, Matt will be furthering his career as a coach by joining the Trisutto coaching team.
Why do you work with Trisutto?
As a late starter to the sport of triathlon, I understand the struggle of coming into the sport with no previous experience. And as a top performing professional I have a firm grasp of what it takes to compete at a high level. As I have learnt over the years, whether it’s in sailing, kayaking or triathlon; the formula for success is very similar, it comes down to the practicality of getting the job done. It’s no coincidence then that my beliefs align very well with the Trisutto coaching methodologies. As a coach I aim to help get the most out of yourself as an athlete no matter your goals or ambitions.
